Controlled morphing of architected liquid crystal elastomer elements: modeling and simulations

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are elastomeric materials possessing a network microstructure made of chains with preferential orientation, induced by mesogen units embedded in the material prior to polymerization. This peculiarity can be harnessed induce deformation LCE element making its switch from preferentially oriented nematic state isotropic one, as occurs for instance rising temperature above transition value characteristic material. mechanism combined an architected arrangement blocks whose orientation and properly differentiated among different zones constituting element. In this way, controlled morphing obtained out elastomer portions (ALCE), leading structure activated precisely tuned heating up or cooling down research, we investigate elements showing capability producing variety deformed shapes. A micromechanical theoretical model is firstly illustrated several examples elements, mechanical response through finite (FE) numerical analyses based on proposed model, critically discussed.
